   Sun and Sea Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, the “pearl of the Indian Ocean” got the world’s finest beaches and a paradise of unlimited Sun, sea, sand and surf all year round. Sri Lanka has the right beach destination for you. Amazingly, all these beaches are within few hours of journey from the capitol.

Beaches totaling 1,340km fringe of the Island, from the long established tourist destination of the southern coast, to the vast beaches of the Deep South and the less visited expanses of the north and east. No matter what time of the year, you can find a beach that is in the season and just waiting to welcome you to it’s warm sands and crystal water.

Negambo Beach
Situated 6km from Colombo international airport and 37km from Colombo capitol is an excellent option for those on a short trip to the island or on a transit flight.

Negambo is a typical fishing town majority of Catholics. Set amid lush grooves of coconut palm, the town has a long history of tourism and a wide sandy beach. Also attract the visitor with Old Dutch canal boat tours, narrow street, small boutiques, Catholic churches, colorful fish market and beachside Bars after dark. Negambo is a well famous town for finest seafood in plenty.

Beaches south coast of Sri Lanka

Bentota Beach
Bantota is the most famous beach resorts area of Sti Lanka located 62km from Colombo capitol. Bentota resort complex in a romantic rendezvous of River and sea with many resort hotels, railway station, post office, shopping arcade, many seafood cafés, and a most colorful open air theater showing folk and mask dancing.

Bentota is the home of world famous architect late Geoffrey Bawa’s estate Lunuganga. Also tourists can take a cruise along the Bentota River to the inland or join with water sports.

Hikkaduwa Beach
Famous for the beach resorts in the island and renowned for diving, coral reef snorkeling, Glass bottom boat trips. There are several wrecks in the area which offers interesting scuba diving trips. Also located licensed PADI centers. Hikkaduwa is best reach for surfing and nightlife.

Unawatuna Beach
Unawatuna is continues to be a favorite of most visitors to Sri Lanka in search of Sun, sea and sand. It was voted among the top 12 beaches in the world and excellent diving. A relaxed atmosphere and lively nights, fine reef for snorkeling, deep blue sea frequented by turtles who comes here to lay their eggs by night. Most accommodations here are the guest houses variety suited to independent travelers.

Capitol of southern Sri Lanka and ancient port city.Moreover, it’s world heritage site for it’s old Dutch fort. Galle is famous for its massive Dutch built fort.(Please refer Galle in Culture section).Galle if famous for it’s lovely Unawatuna Bay. It would be wise to stay in Galle fort and visit Unawatuna during the day.

Weligama Bay
Weligama bay is simply picturesque, famous for stilt-fishing. For those who are looking something special, Taprobane Island can be waded to form the bay.

Mirissa Beach.
Mirissa is one of the best beach destinations in the Deep South. It retains un-spoilt feel and features a beautiful cove. It’s a favorite place for surfers and sporty led traveler. Also take a trip to Whale and Dolphin watching trip as well.

Tangalle Beach
Tangalle’s 4 miles wide bay is the paradise for swimmers and divers.Many hotels located inside the bay. Rekawa village in the beach is an important sea turtle nesting site and visit the nearby rock temple of Mulkirigala with it’s cave paintings and led an excursion to Kalametiya bird sanctuary.

Beaches north & East coast of Sri Lanka

The main city of the east coast of Sri Lanka. Trincomalee has one of the world best natural harbour. According to admiral Lord Nelson as the world finest harbour when he visited abroad HMS Seashore in 1770.Trincomalee is located one of the most strategically point in the world map. During the Second World War, the harbor became the base for the combined East Asian fleet of the allied forces. Famous for water sports and sea trips including fishing, sea angling and whale watching. The longest river of Sri Lanka, Mahaweli River meets the sea at Trincomalee. The Koneswaram Hindu temple located on the top of the Swamy Roack is sacred place of Hindu shrine dedicated to lord Shiva. West of Trincomalee are the Kanniyai Hot-Springs, sacred to Hindu’s who belive them to be the creation of god Vishnu. The Buddhist temple Tiriyaya enshrining the hair relics of the Buddha, dating back to 8th centaury AD.

Nilaveli & Uppuveli Beach
Lie down to the north of Trincomalee and have many years provided warm hospitality on stunning wide sandy beach. According to the visitors, this is the finest beach on the east coast. This 15km stretch on beach extends from Uppuveli, which is 5km from Tricomalee to Nilaveli which is 15km away. With crystal clear water blue water and white beaches, Nilaveli is the best beast beach destination in the east coast for those who loved relax & sun bathing.

Pigeon Island
Near to Nilaveli beach, offshore lies Pigeon Island, 2km from the coast. A treat for divers with it’s vibrant coral gardens and crowd of tropical fishes. An uninhabited island for snorkeling and swimming. Boat services are available.

Pasekudah beach
One of the fast developing touristic beach destination in Sri Lanka and the least-visited on the east coast. Altogether they from 6km of fine sand and fine aquamarine seas that benefit from the protection of an offshore coral reef. This place is windsurfers and water sports delight.

Arugam Bay
Arugam bay is a very popular surfing center ranked 3rd among the best 20 beaches of the world by the British Surfers association. with it’s well establish surfing scene and untouched beaches that stretch both to the north and to the south.

It is situated in close proximity to the Lahugala National park which hosts an array of tropical birdlife and elephant’s .Pottuvill lagoon a bird watchers paradise and Kumana bird sanctuary. Arugam Bay has once again turned into the surfing hotspot that it was and features many international surfing competitions annually.
